This opisthobranch was tentatively identified by by Angel Valdes, Curator of Molluscs, at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Dr. Andrew T. Cohen confirmed the identification. Personal communication from Dr. Cohen is that for a number of years the Haminoea sp. that were abundant in San Francisco Bay were being called Haminoea callidegenita, perhaps incorrectly. More work is needed to come up with the correct name, but Dr. Cohen suggests that that what had been called H. callidegenita on this coast is really H. japonica. This link at California Academy of Sciences talks about this same issue: http://www.calacademy.org/research/izg/SFBay2K/bubblesnail.htm |
